Decitabine (5-Aza-2-deoxycytidine) is a cytosine analog with potent antileukemic activity and able to induce in vitro gene activation and cellular differentiation by a mechanism probably involving DNA hypomethylation. The incorporation of Decitabine into DNA blocks DNA methylation and can result in the activation of specific genes, such as tumor suppressor genes.
